There are thousands of would-be consultants and advisors who would have you believe that web site traffic promotion is akin to either some kind of witchcraft or requires a PhD in some kind of arcane technology. Neither one is true. Web Site traffic promotion is actually very straightforward and simply requires one to keep focus on what’s really relevant to get traffic and not get caught up on all the esthetics and urban legend of the internet. There are three simple rules: Merchandise, Advertise, and Analyze.

Merchandise. Merchandising is the process of readying your products and services for sale. In a large store like Wal-Mart, for example, it governs how goods are displayed, priced, and described in-store. On your web site it’s the same game. You have to prepare your goods and services for commerce – within your site — by making them easily found, attractively positioned, and appropriately priced.

Advertise. You don’t get traffic by waiting for people to come to you. You must tell them where you are and what you’ve got. On the internet, web site traffic promotions depends on three advertising activities: submission to search engines, online advertising (PPC, email promotions, etc.), and conventional print advertising (print ads, stationery, signage, etc.)

Analyze. The most important rule for web site traffic promotion is often the most commonly overlooked. A good marketer is always reviewing the results of their efforts and making adjustments or new tests with their merchandising and advertising. In Wal-Mart, for example, products may be shifted between deep in an aisle to the so-called “end cap” of an aisle or moved to Point of Sale (i.e. the cash register). Everything you do in internet marketing must be measured and analyzed for improvement. It’s the only strategy that wins.

So forget all the so-called experts and, instead, just focus on the three simple rules for web site traffic promotion: merchandise, advertise and analyze.

Website promotion is top priority for website owners. After all, what is the purpose of having a website if no one will visit it? Because there are so many websites like yours on your World Wide Web, you should take all efforts to promote your website.

You don’t have to have a high budget to effectively promote your website. Even with a small budget, you can still take steps to introduce your site to new visitors. There are also many free ways to promote your site. With a little time and effort, you will begin to notice more hits to your website.

Search Engines, Classifieds and Directories

This is a very basic but powerful tool to bring massive hits to your website. Most web surfers will use directories and search engines to find websites and informational pages that suit their needs. By having your site listed on as many search engines, classifieds, and directories as possible, you are widening your opportunities of being seen.

Your aim is to land on the first page of a search engine when a user types in a certain phrase or keyword. There are several factors that contribute to getting on the first page of the search. It is best to use services like DriveMeHigh.com to ensure that you appear on every search engine, directory, and classifieds out there. Professional website promoters know exactly what it takes to optimize your website for maximum exposure.

Forums and Message Boards

People like to communicate and talk to other people with similar interests. A forum or message board can help them do just that. There are free forum scripts and programs that you can install on your site. Allowing users to carry on discussions will bring them back to your website.

The trick here is to make sure that you make posts and encourage discussion among site visitors. Post as often as you can, and you will see that visitors will begin commenting on the topic and starting topics of their own. You can use the same concept with forums and message boards on other websites. Always place your URL in the signature of every forum that you are part of. More posts mean more exposure.

Email Marketing

This doesn’t have to be complicated or hard to utilize. A simple email subscribe box will suffice. You can find these on many website promotion sites. Offer a newsletter or reminder service so that users can revisit your website whenever new content appears.

Make your subscription as appealing as possible. You can do this by offering something valuable to your visitors. For example, if you offer beauty products on your website, you might want to put together a beauty ezine filled with tips and tricks of applying cosmetics. Always have a link in the email taking them back to your website. Suggest products and pages of your website that they can visit for more information.

Articles and Content

If you have a great product or service on your website, write an article about it. Choose a few keywords and make sure that it appears in the article a few times. This will be picked up by search engines when a user types in that keyword, or something similar.

Having articles and content on your site does a few things. First, it promotes your product in detail. When visitors have more information, they can make a decision to buy. Secondly, search engines may place you on the first page if the content of your site is relevant to what the user has searched.

Lastly, you can also distribute these articles to free article websites. In the resource box, make sure you put information about your website and provide a URL to the site. If a reader is interested in what you have to say, they might just visit your website and make a purchase. Webmasters frequently visit these websites for content to place on their sites. This means more exposure for your website!

Be diligent and put in good effort, and visitors will come. It may take a few weeks to a few months, but as long as you do it right, site traffic will increase and return visitors will be more frequent.

My husband and I had offline businesses for over 30 years when we decided that Internet Marketing was a business we wanted to get in to. We barely knew how to send an email but we were willing to learn.

You are bombarded daily with emails trying to sell you ebooks on how to make money on the web. Many of the emails tell you to find small niches to get your business going.

If you try to jump into the big markets or niches you will have a hard time making any money unless you really know what you are doing. A new person trying to compete in a broad market does not have much chance of success. With money and time you may succeed but it may just be better to find a few smaller niches to try at first.

On About.com, Susan Ward defines Internet Marketing as “the strategies that are used to market a product or service online, marketing strategies that include search engine optimization and search engine submission, copywriting that encourages site visitors to take action, web site design strategies, online promotions, reciprocal linking, and email marketing”. A new person coming online to start a business has little knowledge of what all of that statement actually means.

So how does a new person have any chance at success? Think smaller and think niche. If you can find a niche in something that you like, such as horse training or maybe even decorating, you will enjoy working on it a lot more.

You should get as much free information that you can find on the internet to get you started. Do a Google search for some of your ideas to see how many other people may already be in a particular market. You may surprise yourself and find a market you like that has less competition but at the same time one that has many searches.

You will have to invest some money and a lot of time to become successful with anything you decide to do with Internet Marketing. You need to be persistent and not give up. You may not make money right away but if you keep learning and applying what you learn you can become a success.

Success in any business, whether online or off, comes down to having the right product that people need and want. So remember, if you can find the right niche or niches you will be able to have an Internet Marketing business that will make you money.

For example, if you are blogging daily and you have a significant number of people in your blogging audience, it would be wise to have someone proofread your work for basic punctuation errors before you send it into the blog world. I think the idea of employing a virtual assistant is a no-brainer since they will usually work without demanding a minimum hours policy and you do not have to pay them expensive benefits.

What’s the basic of Search Engine Optimization? SEO is a big field and growing tremendously. Understanding SEO basics is essential for you as a web site owner. At times you can always do a bit of search engine yourself if you are a website owner. Knowing the basics of SEO is essential for it.

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization, targeted at getting a top placement in search engines is a technique used to get top ranking. There are a few key considerations to keep in mind while doing your SEO.

  • Your keyword
  • Keyword density in your webpage
  • Keyword in Title
  • Keyword in Meta tag (Deprecated)
  • Keywords in the end of the page
  • Keyword in the Heading tag
  • Keyword in Italics

Placing your keyword in prominent positions will enable you to get a good ranking in the search engines. Make sure that your pages are Static HTML pages with No errors to get a better ranking. I have been asked many times if adding RSS feed content to your web site helps improve page rank and web site placement in the free search listings. First we have to look at RSS and if it’s right for your web site.

RSS is basically Really Simple Syndication written in XML code. It allows a script to run in a RSS Reader or on your website that allows updated content that you subscribe to automatically become up to date as soon as it is published.

The great thing about this is that you can always have fresh content on your site without having to do any updating or babysitting.

Search engines have been known to eat up RSS feed content on web sites. They love to deliver new information to visitors. One thing to remember is that the feed must be displayed in HTML format. Search engine spiders do not read java script as plain text, so it is essential to better placement that HTML code be placed in your site instead.

There are several programs that do all the hard work for you. RSS Equalizer is easy to install and lets you customize your feeds to fit your particular subject content you need. It all works on your web server backend. You log in, set up the categories of feed you want, test them, and place them on your site. No need to update, it’s all automatic.

Next, does your site have an area that you can ad RSS feed content to? You can ad some to the home page. In the setup, you can set how many topics you want listed on a page.

It is only relevant to the engines if the keywords you are trying to place with also reflect in the RSS content. So the keywords must be in the title tag, keyword tag, description tag, page content, and RSS feed content for best results.

Try testing a secondary page that is not your home page. Optimize your web site for best placement, and then add the RSS content. MSN will pick it up very quickly, Yahoo, and Google will be soon to follow. If certain content doesn’t work, go back to the sites where you pulled the RSS feeds from and see if there is more keyword relevant content.

For example you can pull an SEO related feed that will have SEO in every topic. Ten topics to the feed, that’s 10 keywords added to your page content.

Keep an eye on it for the first few weeks. If it is getting you into the listings, you are doing great. You have a robotic editor keeping your site in great position.

Good luck and have fun not matter what you do.

Every webmaster dreams of getting so much traffic from the search engines that it overloads the circuits of their web hosting provider’s network. Getting your site listed on page one for several relevant keyword phrases on the major search engines is the key to approaching this level of traffic. Getting there requires creative writing skills, diligent effort and a little knowledge about search engine optimization. Read on for some search optimization instructions including five indispensable elements to help your search engine rankings and resulting traffic.

Content is King - If you have done any research on search engine optimization, you are aware of the need to optimize the content of your web pages. Your content must be optimized for the search engines and have optimal usage of your most important relevant keywords and keyword phrases. As you write user friendly content keep in mind you should be optimizing your pages with phrases that best match your overall theme. This is preferred by the search engine algorithms. You can then focus on link popularity and link quality to help drive traffic. More on those two strategies in a moment.

Keyword Optimization - By optimizing your pages with the phrases that best match the overall theme of your site, it will improve the likelihood that users will find your site when searching for content like yours. You should seek out short multi-word phrases unless your keywords are unique. First, find your optimum keywords and determine their popularity. Also, use your top keyword phrases within your meta tags including your title, description, keyword and h1 through h6 meta tags.

Link Popularity - To increase your traffic, you must increase your link popularity. Link popularity is the number of links on the internet that reference to your website. If you are on a budget, link popularity can generally be increased primarily in two ways. The first method is by exchanging links with other web sites with similar content. The second method is publishing articles online that relate to your site, including a link to your site in the article and then publishing the article on as many article directory sites as possible. Employing both methods is the most effective; however, the latter is extremely effective because it creates multiple one-way links back to your site.

Article Publishing - Most webmasters frequently seek out good site content - remember content is king. They either lack the writing skills or lack the innovation or initiative to develop the content themselves. Webmasters with a budget often hire ghost writers. Those without money look to article directories to obtain some of their content. This demand for content by other webmasters creates an opportunity for you to socialize your site. Writing articles that relate to your content and publishing those articles within article directories ultimately disseminates your link onto other webmaster’s sites. Think of the potential here. You are getting a one-way link from every site that posts your article. Top search engine optimization gurus exploit this little known strategy to drive their client web sites to top rankings

Link Quality - Remember, link popularity is important, but link quality may be even more crucial. There are two facets to link quality. First, sites that are pointing to your website ideally must have related content. Search engines will give links from sites with related content more credibility. The second component to link quality is the actual words the other webmaster uses in your link. The goal is to ensure the links pointing back to your website include your most relevant keywords in the link title.

Search engine optimization requires a combination of these five elements. Highly optimizing your website content and obtaining high link popularity from quality links will absolutely strengthen your search engine rankings over time. Of course, as with many things, your level of effort at implementing these elements is directly proportional with the results you can expect to get out.

In considering a successful promotional campaign, I like to sit and visualize what I want to accomplish today. At times, revolutionary new ideas will come into play and you will find that the spark is sometimes just what is needed to have maximum success on the internet.

OK, so we have been down the road with the Internet being nothing but ad content, keywords and links, right? Well, having said that say you take a website, any website at all. You click through the various pages of that site and what do you see? You see pages, all independent pages of the original home page. You could possibly see a links page, or a contact us page, or possibly another page with descriptions more in detail on a particular subject and so on.

What if you thought about each individual page of a website as a whole unique site? What if you build a website, adding all the necessary elements to that particular site such as keyword rich content, links etc. and you promote each page individually from the other pages.

In other words, when you are writing your press releases about a particular page with a unique URL, you will not only be adding content about that page, but there is a distinct possibility that someone will see the page with interest and begin the click through process in the entire site. Personally, I want people to go to my homepage first, but thinking outside the box, and not doing everything the way others do, I am thinking this is nothing short of revolutionary.

Imagine the possibilities. You could spend your quality writing time by promoting each individual page to the search engines…approaching different keyword areas…and eventually spreading that one website throughout the entire Internet for a whopping exposure to Google. The so-called Internet marketing gurus would call this driving tons of motivated traffic to your site…I am sure you have seen the Internet ads, right?

Now, to be sure, this will take to visualization and revamping of a website. To make each page of the site an entire search engine friendly site will take time and effort to accomplish. But I am thinking that the time spent here will be well worth the effort. Its all about combining the elements and growing your website gradually that spells the difference between success and failure.

You know, it really is all about testing. I test everything in my website promoting all the time. I think that putting the best original content and information in front of the Google bot at all times is the most powerful way to promote on the Internet period.

While I see programs that are designed to do this all automatically for you, I am more prone to conduct my own Internet experiments and eventually I will come up with the perfect blend of elements of a website and will land top positions for that website. This will in turn create traffic to my website and eventually sales. And…by the way…I did not spend money to do this.

You can literally be duped out of more money on the net by trying this system and that system…and believe you me…the $19.95 here…and the $29.95 there…mount up to amazing amounts of money very quickly when all the answers were right there in front of you on the keyboard.

The cost of that is nothing more than your Internet connection and a hosting plan from a reliable and customer oriented domain hosting company. This sum of money spent is a mere pittance compared to buying software programs that supposedly make you tons of money…drive motivated visitors to your sites…etc.

Oh well, like I have said before, I do not approach my Internet business the way that everyone else does. And the great thing here is…I have really good success in placing my URLs to the top of Google.

This is all part of thinking outside the box and doing your own thing on the Internet. This Internet marketing system and style works very well for far sighted individuals seeking success on the information highway.

Google AdWords is an effective means of pulling in targeted traffic to your website. It allows you to get your site listed on the first page of the search results on Google and its advertising network for virtually any keyword phrase you can imagine. I’m convieced that Google is the best advertising channel that can generate consistent and quality traffic day in and day out.

Before tapping into a new market segment, you should test it with Google first, and then move on to experiment with other advertising methods using the data and statistics of traffic patterns you get through Google AdWords. However, you’d better do it right because advertising on Google is not something you can afford to screw up. If you don’t know the proper way to implement Google’s system, you’ll end up spending 50% more than you should be buying their clicks.

After working with Google AdWords for the several years, I have pretty much experienced every mistake one could make when using Google AdWords. Below is a list of the top 6 mistakes that you should avoid.

1. Bidding too high for the top position:
When it comes to bidding on keywords, it seems like you should bid for the top placement. However, the biggest problem with the top spot is that there are many Internet surfers who click on ads without reading them first. Top ads are most likely to receive unqualified clicks. Also, you may overbid relative to profit potential. Unless you have predetermined data indicating a high bid will return a positive ROI, you need to keep your bids low. You may not be able to attract lots of traffic, but you can collect CPC and conversion data before going deeper into the niche you are exploring.

2. Implying that the promoted product or service is free:
Inexperienced advertisers tend to lure in visitors by implying that the product they are promoting is free. Bad idea! Traffic alone doesn’t mean anything. Only sales pay your bills. Doing so will only attract tire kickers who are not interested in buying anything from you, and you’ll be paying for each one of them. A good Google ad is all about striking a balance and attracting the right type of traffic.

3. Bidding on generalized keywords:
Common keyword phrases can suck up a lot of ad spending without producing any conversions. Those people who search very broad terms like “make money” don’t know what they want. They are still in the research phase of the buying lifecycle. Your advertising should be tailored to your market’s buying habits.

4. Setting a low daily budget:
The daily budget for your campaign is the ceiling on your daily spending. You can set this number at whatever you want. Some people say it is a good idea to start out with a low daily budget while you refine your AdWords effectiveness. However, my experience tells me if you set your daily budget too low, your ad won’t get served with every search query that is made with your keywords. Google’s system takes your daily budget, as well as other factors, into consideration and serves your ad accordingly. Set your daily budget about 5 times the amount that Google suggests, and monitor your campaign regularly.

5. Leaving the content network on:
Probably the most common mistake people make is using the content network. Unless you have great experience, you should turn off the content network. You can incur a large amount of advertising dollars on the content network very quickly while getting very low quality traffic from it.

6. Linking directly to merchant’s website:
Direct linking is easy to be set up, but it doesn’t allow for the opportunity of pre-selling your visitors. You could be wasting your money if your merchant’s website doesn’t convert. If you’re promoting a specific product or service, you may want to create a landing page where you can pre-sell and promote more than one similar products at the same time to produce higher conversions.

These are just some of the mistakes that are easily made by advertisers while working with Google AdWords. PPC advertising is pretty competitive, and it’s impossible to achieve success with mistake ridden AdWords campaigns. Making as less mistakes as you can is the first step of avoiding being taken out of the Internet marketing game.

I will let you into a secret, one that will allow you to directly advertise to thousands of people. This isn’t another “rent an email list”-esque technique. If done right this could give you 100% targeted, interested visitors.

The secret lies in Social Networking.

WAIT!!! I hear your groans of discontentment, but please hear me out. Social networking sites and services hold the key to free, and much more importantly, targeted advertising. This is such a powerful medium that when done right it can get you valuable and recurring traffic.

Take the largest Social Networking site, at the time of writing, myspace. According to various sources myspace, as of March 2006, has over 61 million users, and 21 million unique visitors, with 220,000 new members joining daily. These statistics are amazing, and also, at time of writing, about 6 months old, meaning that the current day statistics are liable to be much higher. It is one of the fastest growing, and most popular websites out there on the internet. Many people have been quoted as boasting 1000s of “friends” within the first week of registration, with many more people visiting their space.

Now that is said, you can see my point. This is a fantastic, and lucrative, promotional technique, for any website, although it is usually more useful to owners of “hobby” based websites.

The technique is basically, sign up to myspace, create a profile - based around your site and collect a list of friends. It is almost like building an opt in email list, except the members are all there, and are out to be your friend, rather than you having to coax people into joining your mailing list.

Take a car forum for instance. If you were to go onto myspace and register, you would want to base your profile around cars. In fact, you really want to write your profile from the perspective of your target audience, that way you are more likely to attract more targeted traffic.

With the help of the various myspace profile builders and generators out there on the internet, it has never been easier to set up a myspace profile. Now all you need to do is start getting “friends”.

A “friend” is someone who has seen your profile, and likes you as a person, and wants to join your “friends” list. Usually a myspace user will choose people with the same or similar interests as them to be their friends.

Friends have the access to post messages on other user’s profile pages, ie: leave them a comment. This is one place you want to advertise. Do not make your advert too blatant, or formal. Be informal and friendly. Remember, this message will not only be seen by your friend, but also my everyone who visit’s your friend’s myspace profile.

There are hundreds of other ways of advertising to potential users and customers using myspace, that is just one. You can send out messages to people, and even include your link on your profile itself. You just need to take time to browse the plethora of different features myspace, and other such social networking websites, have to offer.

Six Search is a fantastic up-and-coming search engine, with Domain and Video searches included as standard, as well as Web, Images, News Searches and a Local Businesses search for the US only.

Many people do anything and everything to get traffic to their website. But what are actually the best ways to get traffic to your website? Well, I decided to narrow it down to two strategies: SEO and PPC. People tend to use one or the other, but throughout this article I want to discuss the benefits of both and why you should use both methods to your advantage.

Lets kick things off with SEO…

When building the pages of your website, you must choose targeted keywords that represents your website’s theme (remember to make sure your keyword appears high on the page, preferably within the first 100 characters—the spiders love it). Search engine optimization is the way you present those keywords to all the search engines. With seo, you are basically optimizing your pages to make sure that all the search engines know what your pages are about (optimizing your pages also ensures that you will be listed as high as possible on the search results pages for your keywords). Since we want to optimize our pages so that the search engines can find our keywords easier and faster, we must write pages that include the following:

  • Keywords in all of the title/meta tags
  • Keywords in text links
  • Keywords in headlines
  • Keywords body text
  • Keywords in description

Don’t spend too much time rewriting all of your pages to get everything perfect; just do the basics and let your powerful content take over.

Content and links are the most important factors in SEO

Content: You are going to need good content along with relevant keywords.

Content is, by far, the most important element in search engine optimization. When visitors arrive to a website, they expect to find what ever they are looking for. If you don’t have what they’re looking for, they will quickly press the back button and find answers on another site. With that being said, search engines judge human reaction to your website. They look at how long visitors stay on your site; if they link to your site; and how many pages they go through on your site. If you rely too much only on getting clicks on search engine results pages and not focusing enough on content, you will suffer in the long run.

Your main goal should be to build quality content that you know your visitors will love. When you have quality content, everything seems to take care of itself:

You will have your visitors publish you RSS feed

You will receive plenty of one-way incoming links from people who like your site and decide to link to it (very important)

Once the engines see good human reaction like this, you will rank higher and higher for your keywords (remember, if you want your keywords to show up faster, you must use the right keywords: relevant, low supply, and high demand).

Lets not forget, at the end of the day, the search engines want websites with high quality content that are relevant to the keyword/phrase a person has entered.

There is no need to over analyzing your site to perfection; just make sure you have enough on page hooks so the that the search engines can know what your pages are about.

Links: Your site is only as good as the amount of quality incoming links

Inbound links helps the spiders get to, and crawl, your website. You need quality inbound links… search engines measure the amount of quality links coming into a site over time. If you don’t have a high enough link popularity, the search engines will occasionally drop you. One way to get some quality links is to link exchange with similar themed websites.

While we pay attention to all aspects of SEO, we must not forget what determines the quality of a website. Search engines measure the quality of your pages by human reaction; that is why exchanging links with relevant websites is still important. When you exchange links with another relevant website, the search engines know that someone thought highly enough of your website to request a link exchange. When you link with a site that is related to yours, the search engines give your site more points. Links coming into your site helps give you a high ranking for your keywords at all search engines. This will, in time, increase your page rank—ultimately increasing your traffic.

    One way links…

The only two other ways to get links is to either buy them or have people link to your site automatically. Search engines are starting to penalize people who buy links to artificially boost their page rank; so I wouldn’t try this at the moment. Buying links is risky business; doing it might cause your website to get banned from search engines.

The other incoming links you get are when people like your site and automatically one-way link to it. This how you should get most of your incoming links. And this brings us back to high quality content: If people love what you have written (whether it be in a forum, one of your articles, or your website), they will have no problem linking to your site.

    Pay-per-click advertising…

The next type of traffic were going to look at is pay-per-click traffic. While search engine optimization is more of a slow and organic process, PPC advertising allows you to receive instant traffic. The only downside to this kind of traffic is that you have to pay for it. So what you want to do is get the best return on investment you possibly can.

If you are going to use pay-per-click advertising please stick with Adwords. Google Adwords is the biggest, and by far the best, PPC service available. Using it, you are able to have scalable results instantly. When you use an Adwords campaign to promote various products and services, you will know what’s working and what’s not working right away. So the goal is to use Google’s Adwords advertising service to test your products and your websites to see what makes you money and what does not.

A novice might think all she has to do is bid on a few keywords to use in her PPC campaign and pay every time someone clicks on her ads that show up under “sponsored links” on the search engine results page for those words. You get great feedback instantly; sounds simple enough, right? But there is so much more to it than that. If you don’t run your Adwords campaigns properly and track your results, you won’t be making money; you will be losing money… fast. So the key here is managing your campaign.

Adwords is kind of difficult to figure out at first; anyone who has ever used it will tell you that. The PPC market is super competitive (and even more so for the niches that generate the most money) and the only way to have success is to…

  • Learn how to write relevant ads
  • Keep a close eye on your competition
  • Do some extensive keyword research
  • Learn how to target ads
  • Learn how to create adgroups the right way
  • Learn how to bid
  • Learn how to avoid using overpriced terms
  • When and when not to use the content network
  • What to have on your landing pages
  • Advantages and disadvantages of direct linking
  • How to choose the right products
  • And much more

Bonus Tip: Use PPC advertising while you wait for your free traffic

The best way to take advantage of Adwords is to use it while you apply your SEO strategies. Because SEO is organic, it can take a while before you receive free traffic from the search engines. PPC click can bring you traffic in the mean time. When you start receiving loads of free traffic, you can then cut back on your campaign spending. If you use this strategy for all of your websites, you will always have traffic coming into your site.

I honestly believe you should use both methods (SEO and PPC advertising) to get traffic to your site. People tend to use one or the other. But why not use both? Instead of waiting months for the free traffic to kick in, you could be getting scalable results using Adwords in the meantime. Just be sure to work within your budget.
