I just added one of my favorite business-related quotes to this website.

“In the very near future there will be two types of business: Internet business, and out of business.”
-Bill Gates

That Bill Gates quote gets the point across more effectively and in less words than any other means of which I can think: Internet business is not only the inevitable future, but it’s also quickly becoming the present.

I remember when I sold on eBay (before I started scottsafetyshop.com), eBay gave updates on the pawn shop industry’s futile fight in Washington. The pawn shop industry literally has to battle daily in Washington to try to circumvent the fact that their market has left them for the online auction craze.

To me, the internet as a novel and growing business forum reminds me of industrialized society as a novel and growing business forum. While the internet exists in the context of a present technological revolution; railroads, mass-production, and such existed in the context of the historical industrial revolution.

I can easily picture an archaic local food market put of business by the centralized food production that came with industrialization. As the stubborn local food producers struggled, the railroad capitalists and mass-food producers bathed in money.

Just as the countries that failed to get in on industrialization couldn’t compete, and just as the capitalists who capitalized on industry benefited, those that lead the pack into internet business achieve success, while those who rely on archaic business models fail. Simply put, horses can’t compete with cars.
