Link Popularity & Backlinks

Here is a tip for building links: Search on the search engines for places to submit links related to your topic.

For example, if your website is about fishing, you could go to a search engine like Google or Yahoo and do searches such as the following:

“fishing submit link”
“fishing websites”
“fishing website directory”
“fishing add link”
“fishing add URL”
etc.

The goal is to find relevant websites that will let you submit your link. Sometimes if you find a website with a list of links to websites such as yours, then you can email the webmaster and ask to include your link.

Here is a tip for building links. Check to see your competitors backlinks.

Most major search engines let you search to see some or all of the web-pages that they have indexed as linking to a certain other website or web-page. For example, preforming the search “link:website.com” on Google or Yahoo will return a list of web-pages that link to pages on website.com.

First, check to see where your competitors get links. Then see if you can get links from the same websites or using a similar method. For example, you might come across niche directories that link to your competitors website that will allow you to submit links. You can also email the webmasters linking to your competitor and ask them to link to you. That will work most effectively if your website is actually better than your competitor’s website.

However it happened, websites that are linking to your competitor’s website are likely to have a way for you to get a link from them to your website.

Today I will tell you about a great way to get great backlinks. It is guest blogging.

Guest blogging is when a blogger has you make a post on their blog. Generally, if they are not paying you money to do it, they will let you include a link back to your website.

Guest blogging will get you good links from good blogs. These links can bring you traffic and improve your rankings in the search engines.

If you know what you are talking about, even popular bloggers will be happy to let you post a guest blog. If the blog owner does not already know you, the blog owner will probably judge you based on your website. Additionally, the value of promoting your website is based on how good the website is. So, before guest blogging, you want to make sure you have a great website with great content.

Guest blogging will help you improve your reputation and expand your audience. For it to be effective, you need to make a great, original blog post. Additionally, it is probably best if the blog and the blog post are both relevant in some way to your website.

The amount of backlinks to your website greatly helps determine your website’s rankings in the search engine. Additionally, the search engine will determine the topic of your website and its pages based upon the topics of the websites linking to them and the anchor text in those links. Let’s look at some ways to get backlinks.

Make quality content - You can get the most backlinks by making great content. If your website content is great, then other webmasters will link to your website naturally.

Forum Posting and Blog Commenting - When you post on forums or blogs you can leave a link back to your website. Remember, do not spam. Make quality posts and comments, and then people will want to come to your website without you asking.

Submit to Directories - I do not think directories are as useful as they used to be. Search engines are getting better at figuring out that the links are artificial. Nonetheless, you can still easily get links to your website using directories.

What do you think? How do you gain backlinks?

Gaining a lot of links to your website takes time and effort, but it greatly affects your website’s success. Having a lot of good links will gain you more traffic and higher rankings in the search engines. I often discuss link popularity on this blog, but there is a blog dedicated to link building strategies at linkbuildingbestpractices.com.

Major search engines such as Google determine the value of your page by the number of links it has coming to it. Additionally, they can use the words and phrases in the links to determine your website’s topics. For example, if your website has a lot of links with the anchor text ‘dog training books,’ then your website might come up when someone searches for dog training books.

You have to be careful when trying to gain links. Search engines have spam filters to stop people from gaining artificial links for their websites. If you gain links in an unusual or exceptionally rapid way, the search engines’ algorithms may flag it as spam and your site will get dropped down or out of the search engines’ listings.

In my opinion, the best way to gain links is the natural way. Try your best to have a great website that is very useful. Then other webmasters will choose to link to you on their own.

Google has begun drastically cracking down on many link promotion methods that webmasters use. They have started systematically discounting paid links, directory links, signature links, and other links that a webmaster creates for themselves. In addition, Google has started penalizing sites that buy or sell links, or otherwise try to create “artificial links” for themselves.

As far as Google goes, the only safe way to gain links seems to be organically. An organic link is a link that another webmaster puts to you on their own, without being encouraged or asked by you. These natural links are hard to get, though.

This is going to make it very hard on newer websites. How are they going to get started? They will be stuck in a catch 22 caused by Google. They cannot get popular without getting natural links, but they cannot get natural links without being popular. You only get natural links by getting a lot of people who come to your site, and a few of them happening to be webmasters who have a website that would benefit by linking to you.

For the most part, the only new websites able to get enough traffic to get those natural links will be the websites with a huge amount of money to spend on advertising, marketing, and promotion. Google has hindered the little guy by creating a catch 22 for people without the huge amounts of money required to get natural links for a new website.

Anyway, once you have traffic and rankings, you can get more natural links by ensuring that you have a great website to which other webmasters will want to link.

The biggest misconception of link building is that it is solely intended to increase your rank within the search engines. The majority of us who use this train of thought would then proceed to get as many links for their site from any sources available, without understanding the real value behind carrying out this time consuming project. Not only do you obtain a large number of irrelevant links that will not benefit you, but you have wasted precious time and missed out on a lot of targeted traffic.

So what is the true value of link building? First and foremost, it should be intended to generate quality traffic for your business. If you keep this thought in mind when carrying out your assignment, then you are most certainly going to obtain relevant links along the way that will help to boost your exposure within the search engines, making it a win / win situation.

A good example would be this article. Once it is submitted to several article directories, people who are searching for information on link building will most likely read this information posted. At the bottom is a link to my site which is based on offering search engine marketing services and link building campaigns. If a reader was interested in finding out more, there is a high chance that they will follow through on my link and read up about my services. In this case, not only have I generated a quality lead, but I have also attained a relevant link from the article directory. If twenty people read my article each day and ten people where to click through to my website, then you can obviously see that the link building has done its job in attracting targeted visitors.

However, if I was to write up an article on the latest mobile phones and provided a link to my website, then there is a very high chance that a reader will not follow through on the link. A search engine works in the same respect. Just like a human visitor, why should it read up on marketing services if it’s currently reading an article on mobile phones? From this a search engine can see that the link was placed for the sole purpose of link building and has no genuine relationship. As a result, no targeted traffic will come through to my site and the link will not benefit me in any way.

At the end of the day it all boils down to the quality of the link. Another good example is: if you were to have two restaurants to choose from and two different people recommending which one to eat at, you are most likely to take the advice of the person who has more authority on the subject of restaurants. In a similar manner, a search engine will follow and count the relevance of a link based on where the link to you is coming from and if there is a common factor between the sites.

The key to developing good linking strategies that will help your site’s performance in the search engines is to ask yourself the following: will my link entice someone to click on it, which in turn generates quality traffic? Answering “yes” and using this methodology when carrying out your task will attract visitors interested in what you have to offer as well as collect you valuable links.

Every now again there are new methods on how to develop a successful link building campaign. At the same time, new loop holes are being found on how to exploit these methods. Eventually it will come to a point where these loop holes cease to exist. So to avoid getting caught up in the confusion, working toward a campaign that is totally focused on generating quality traffic is the best way to ensure that you are not wasting your time and hard earned dollars with attaining pointless links.
