Blogging

If you want to add a blog to your website but don’t have the time to blog, considering offering your users to blog on your website. You can setup a blog and allow one or more other people to be contributers. Depending on your niche, you can probably find some people who will want to do this for free.

Many people like to blog just to blog. They would like the chance just to have the audience. For example, consider all the people who freely posts blogs on blogspot.com or the other free blog websites.

You could essentially offer a free blog service, like blogspot, but for blogs specifically about the topic of your website.

It’s just an idea, but it can help a lot if you want the benefits of having a blog on your website without putting in the time and effort to post blogs.

If you have a blog, I think the best way to promote it is by commenting on other blogs. You can also promote non-blog websites this way, but I believe it especially works well for blogs.

When you comment on a blog, almost all blogs have a field for your URL. When your comment is published, a link to your website will be published with it. If your comment is very interesting or helpful, then the people who read it may check your link.

The person most likely to check out your link is the blog owner. If you have a blog, you probably check the website of people who regularly post quality comments on your blog.

For this promotion method to work well, you have to remember two main points.

Firstly, make good comments. Most importantly, do not spam. Your comment needs to be specific to the post. It needs to be useful. It could be useful by being interesting, informative, or helpful. You probably want to keep the tone of the blog. Also, you probably want to keep a positive tone and be polite because you represent your website.

Secondly, you need to have a good website. Blog commenting will usually not bring in that many visitors directly. If you have a bad, useless website, then the few people who do come will not stay long and will not tell anyone else about it. In contrast, if you have a great website, then the people who come will stay longer, come back more often, and tell their friends about your website. Since the bloggers will probably come check out your website, they will likely post about your website on their blog if your website is really that good and helpful.

Take this blog for example. You all come here because I provide helpful advice and information. If everyday I just came on here and typed gibberish, nobody would read this blog or share the link to it.

So, remember, post great comments and make your own website great.

If you have a blog or a forum, you can get publicity and comments by using controversial topics.

You do not even have to take a side on the issue. You can inspire comments and links simply by bringing up a controversial topic.

If you do decide to take a side, I would recommend that you express your opinions in a polite and politically correct way. You do not want to offend your regular users.

A controversial topic is a topic about which people tend to have a lot of strong opinions. These include such topics as abortion, assisted suicide, and most political topics. Of course, it is best if you use a controversial topic related to your niche. For example, often times a topic might be controversial to your target users while it is not of much interest to others. That is ideal.

I think that the best way to end a post about a controversial topic is to ask for opinions from your readers. End your post by posing a few questions about the topic to your readers.

I have many different types of websites. And I have experienced first-hand the benefits and drawbacks of them all. For content-driven websites, I recommend blogs most of all.

Blogs are easy to start. It takes very little technical work in comparison to other websites. Additionally, it does not cost much.

You can start a blog in a few easy steps. Firstly, buy your domain. Secondly, install Wordpress on the domain. Thirdly, find and upload a new theme (unless you want to design your own or use the default). Fourthly, edit the theme as you want, and set the options in your admin panel. Finally, start blogging.

Blogs get ranks well because search engines love the fresh content, which is generally well-organized. Blogs also promote themselves by pinging and having RSS feeds. Blogs are good for getting loyal visitors and return traffic because visitors will subscribe and will come back to read new posts.

It takes very little time to maintain a blog. You mostly just post when you get a chance. You do not have to go through hours of work to add a new page or feature like you might with a different type of site.

Firstly, I do want to wish you all a good Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

But the holiday has also caused me to think to advise you to use holidays to connect with your customers.

I often stress the importance of posting fresh, up-to-date content. Posting about holidays on the actual holiday will make you blog seem most up-to-date. It will greatly help connect with your visitors, and it will make your blog seem more lively.

If you want an example, check out the post I made for this holiday on my blog about poverty: Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!

Any post on a blog is a fresh update, but the blog will be especially relevant and up-to-date when you make a point of referencing the happenings of the exact day.

Whether you blog for fun or purposely blog for money, you probably want new ways to monetize your blog. There are many ways to get paid for blogging. Today I want to tell you about Smorty.

Smorty is a service that will pay you to make posts on your blog about other websites. The advertisers on Smorty pay to advertise on blogs because they want hype and publicity.

You still get to post your regular blog posts. When you want to earn some extra money, you just go to Smorty and look through the available offers. You do not have to accept any offers, so you never have to blog about anything. Also, when you accept an offer, you still get to write the blog post. This way your blog is still yours and still only contains your opinions.

I have already used Smorty and received a payment from them. Overall, it took about 10 days for me to receive the payment for the blog post after I posted it. The payments are made by PayPal. No PayPal fees were taken out of my payment, which is an added bonus.

Any way to get paid to blog is good, but be careful when using blog advertising services. You don’t want to turn your blog into one big ad collection, or else you will lose your readers.

I recently signed up with PayPerPost. I signed up with another blog, not this one. I will probably add this blog to my account, but I cannot add another blog until I finish 8 more posts with PayPerPost.

Anyway, this seems like a great way to bring in a new revenue stream. It may not be good for newer blogs without much traffic or PR. However, for established blogs, it is a great way to add a new revenue source.

I have found that the least amount of money paid per post is $5.00, but that is just what I have seen. Popular blogs can get paid more, of course.

Basically, it works like this: You create an account and give them your blog’s information. Once they approve your blog, you can see the open opportunities in your blog’s categories. You can choose an opportunity when you want. This means that you never have to blog about anything. You choose whether or not to take any of the open offers.

Most of the things people pay to have you blog about are going to be good, or else they would not bother to pay for it. It gives you a topic to blog about. In a way, you make money doing mostly what you would do anyway.

There are other paid posting services out there besides PayPerPost, but I have not tried them yet.

Personally, after making and running various websites for years, I think I have come to a conclusion that blogs are the best way to go.

Not using a content management system means that you have to manually update pages. While it may have some advantages, I find it just results in having old pages that rarely get updated.

Search engines love fresh content, and blogs give them that. Users love fresh content, and blogs give them that. The great thing about the blog is that if you use it as the entire site, your homepage is high-traffic and always fresh. Luckily, blogs also organize the content into categories. These categories are also fresh, since they list the posts from newest to oldest.

Additionally, blogs have the option to create single pages too.

Blogging is one of the hottest moneymaking opportunities on the web right now. Successful bloggers have found the financial security they’ve been looking for in this venture. However, other bloggers found disappointment when they didn’t get what they expected.

What’s the difference between a successful blogger from an unsuccessful one? The obvious answer, of course, is the quality of content. Popular blogs offer interesting, entertaining, and informative material. However, there are much lesser known blogs with equally high-quality content, yet no one seems to be dropping by to read them. In this case, the real difference lies on the amount and quality of advertising a popular blog gets compared to an unpopular one.

To make sure your own blog is advertised effectively, here are some tips you can try:

1.) Offline advertising still works wonders even in this age of internet dependence. Give out simple pamphlets to your neighbors, friends, and family. Put a sticker bearing the link to your blog on your car’s bumper. Wear a shirt with your blog’s URL printed on the front and back. These are fairly inexpensive ways to advertise your blog, but they can help a lot in giving more visibility to your site.

2.) Make viral marketing work for you. Encourage your family, friends, and other current readers of your blog to tell their own friends and families about your blog. Word-of-mouth marketing is free, but its power grows exponentially.

3.) Search engine optimization works for article marketing, and it works for blogging too. Use popular keywords related to your topic within your content. This basic SEO technique is a common practice for webmasters and bloggers alike because it really does help with getting better rankings in search engine results.

4.) There are a lot of blog directories to submit your blog to. Take time to study what directories are the biggest and the best so that your blog can have more exposure especially to blog searchers.

The difference between a successful blog and one that fades into nothing is in the number of readers visiting each day. If your goal is to create a large source of income from your site then attracting more visitors is key. This means that you need to increase both your new or unique traffic as well as regular readers.

Create a Loyal Readership

RSS Feed
This is one of the most basic pieces of the blog puzzle which creates a stable group of visitors reading each of your daily postings. An RSS feed notifies your readers that you have created another article and made a new posting on your blog. The RSS feed will also help create a stream of income as more visitors mean a higher page ranking and better search placement.

Social Networks and Engines
There are a number of social bookmarks and other networks available for blogs to utilize. Using a small piece of code on your website, each of your posts can be bookmarked, shared and voted on by readers around the world. Some blogger favorites are Digg, Technorati and Del.icio.us.

Friends and Family
When starting any new business you should first have the support of your family and friends! Let them know that you’ve started a blog and get them to visit on a regular basis. While this will increase your readership immediately, they can also support you by book marking your postings, referring their friends and talking about it with colleagues.

Increase New and Unique Traffic

Search Engine Optimization
The old saying, “it’s easier to keep a customer than find a new one” truly fits on the web. Attracting new visitors will be through a combination of regular postings, great content and search engine optimization techniques. When creating a new article, think about who will be visiting the site and what they will be searching for. Decide upon your main keywords and use them throughout the body of the post.

Niche Marketing
This technique requires a little additional work but it will pay off with a huge amount of traffic. By looking for optimized search terms with low competition you can direct a huge amount of free traffic to your site. The best part about niche marketing is that everything you do costs nothing and the traffic you receive will be hungry for what you’re offering!

Final Thoughts
Each of these tactics takes some time to implement on your site. The important thing to remember is that any source of residual income can only run on auto-pilot after the preparation work is done. By using these techniques within your blog strategy, you will find that your traffic will increase significantly and your increased income will follow!

You may be surprised to learn that you can actually make a lot of extra cash, even up to a full time job, just by creating or writing blogs, about pretty much any subject you like. This post talks introduces writing blogs as a money making technique and some advice as to how to make sure you are making the most from your blogs. I will have further posts later about other things you should know about this method.

I’m assuming you already know what a blog is. If you dont check out wikipedias definition here.

I know a lot of people that enjoy either blogging for themselves or writing comments on social networks sites like Facebook, MySpace etc. What you may not know is that you can actually turn this hobby into a money making method. Even if you don’t already blog, the concept of essentially being able to write about stuff you know about, stuff you like or even stuff you want to know about, and then getting paid for this, is really pretty attractive.

So the question is, how do you make money from blogging. Well, you can actually get a job for someone else who will pay you either a salary or some sort of fee to write blogs but the most common and most profitable way is to write your own blogs that you then monetize. By this I mean that you get visitors of your blog to either click on Google Adsense or other pay per click advertising, or you get visitors to purchase something through an affiliate link - usually something related to your blog of course. So in essence, you make money from blogs through affiliate marketing.

There are many important things to know about blogging for extra money. Some key things to ensure success include:

1. Make sure that the content on your site is attractive, not from a pure graphics point of view but mainly from what is written in your posts. You need to give value to your visitors so that they will want to read through your posts, come back & visit your blog at other times, recommend your blog to others and so on. The old adage definitely applies here: content is king!

2. Like all parts of affiliate marketing, you need to spend time doing keyword research. You need to find a niche subject that is getting a lot of searches in the search engines and that doesnt have a great deal of competition. You should find a subject that also has good affiliate programs linked to it so you can point visitors to them to make some money. Ill do a separate post at a later time about how to do good keyword research. Or you can do a little cheating by grabbing a tool called Extreme Conversions which promises to locate niche keywords for you.

3. You need to generate traffic for your blog. Its no good creating the best blog with the best content, without getting visitors to your blog. There is a whole science behind doing this successfully. I will create more posts about this topic soon.

4. Do not rely on Google Adsense for your monetization. Unless you plan to have hundreds of blogs, these days the money you can make through Google Adsense can be very limited. The best part about Google Adsense is the ease of creating these links on your blogs. There is even a plug-in for Wordpress (the most common blogging software used to create blogs) that allows you to do it automatically.

Pros:

* Blogging can be one of the more enjoyable ways of making money through affiliate marketing, especially if you blog about things that you enjoy and you enjoy networking with other people about the same topic;

* With software like Wordpress, and Fantastico (most web hosting companies offer you this in their web hosting packages), it couldnt be easier to set up a blog

Blogs are so much easier to create than other websites and because of the nature of blogs, your posts can be just natural writing instead of formal sales copy you often need to put on websites;

* Blogs work for you even when you arent there - while you are sleeping, while you are on holidays and so on;

Cons:

* Blogging for extra money is not a fast method of making money by any stretch of the imagination. You need time to create the blogs, optimise them for search engine, write or source good content and then promote them. You then need to research good affiliate marketing programs and create content that will motivate a visitor to click on your affiliate link. It typically takes about 6-12months before you start seeing good money being made from any blog and thats if you promote it correctly;

* Depending how successful you are at any one subject, you typically have to have a number of blogs running at one time in order to create good money. This can be time consuming and tedious if you have created blogs on subjects you dont really enjoy but you chose because they are good money makers;

* There is a lot to learn about blogging successfully. There are many bloggers out there that don’t know how to do this well and so do not make much money and soon get discouraged.

For Australians:

There isnt really any impact (good or bad) that I can think of for Australian bloggers. One thing I guess has some bearing is that this method of making money, like most affiliate marketing, isn’t as huge as it is in the US & the UK, which means that there could be more potential here. However, this is only if you do purely topics for Australians, otherwise you are going to be competing on the world stage anyway. And even if you are doing purely topics for Australians, you may be limiting your overall market, as there are many more internet users in the US/UK than in Australia. However, having said all this, some of the best known bloggers in the world are from Australia, so that is something to take into account.

As above, there is much to learn about blogging to do it successfully and to make good money from it. There are lots of good websites out there that give you great advice and there are some great eBooks and mentoring programs that can help you fast track your learning and give you personal advice.

If you track and measure your traffic to your blog, search engine results, and comments to your blog you will become more effective. How can you make improvements to something if you do not know what needs to be fixed. This is the same thing with your blog. If your are checking all the these things on a regular basis you can do more of what works, and cut out what no longer works. This is why I say that is imperative to continue to monitor your site.

These Are the Top 3 Ways to Measure your Blogs Effectiveness

1. Traffic

Traffic is the most excellent way to effectively measure the success of your blog. By observing the statistics, recording the traffic to your blog is easy to do. You can use a variety of methods and sites to track traffic. A few sites used to measure are sitemeter.com and blogpatrol.com. These will determine how much traffic is being directed to your site. You will always want to know where traffic is coming from. Track how you are doing in comparison to last month. Were your results higher earlier or later in the month? What are your visitors numbers and how many page views do you have? Is traffic higher when you submit a newsletter or a promotion of some sort? Find out which links get the most clicks. Find out if traffic is mostly generated from a specific podcast or article. How many RSS requests have you received in the past? These are great questions to ask yourself when creating your blog.

2. Search Engines

Targetting the top keywords in your niche is the best way to optimize the search engine. Choosing the right keywords will enable you to be in the top of the list of things being searched. Even choosing keywords that do not particularly get a whole lot of searches can be useful. Getting the perfect combination of words is the right way to use a search engine and get results. You can track and measure these results easily through the search engine.

3. Comments

When people leave comments on your blog you need to always be sure to respond and build that relationship with your visitors. This is very important. Stay committed to delivering valuable information to your readers and watch the comments grow. Read the comments and see where you can improve or what you are doing right. This is like automatic feedback from the readers. Interaction is key.

These are all ways to make your blog the most effective it can be. Best of luck to your success.
