I signed up to a bunch of new social bookmarking websites today. Social bookmarking sites are sites that allow users to easily post sites that they like to share with the other users.
Social bookmarking sites can be used as a good method to promote your own web pages, because you can bookmark them and share them. Other people may come as result, and if your page is good they will bookmark it too and share it with their friends.
Here is a list of the sites I joined today:
http://www.furl.net/
http://reddit.com/
http://ma.gnolia.com/
http://de.lirio.us/
http://myweb2.search.yahoo.com/
http://www.simpy.com/
http://www.newsvine.com/
http://bluedot.us/
http://www.blinklist.com/
http://www.netvouz.com/
http://www.spurl.net/
http://www.dzone.com/
http://www.clipmarks.com/
http://www.shoutwire.com/
http://www.backflip.com/
http://www.bibsonomy.org/
http://www.diigo.com/
Also, I was already a member of these major bookmarking sites:
http://digg.com/
http://del.icio.us/
http://www.stumbleupon.com/
Remember, don’t waste your time using these bookmarking sites to try an promote bad quality web pages. They only will work if you have a great web page to share, because then the members will keep sharing the page with each other. The whole point of social bookmarking is to help users find great websites based on other people’s ratings. If your site is no good, then at most a few people will come and they will not share it. The trick is to have a great web pages that will keep getting shared over and over because they are so great that lots of people get told and then continue telling others.

Keep in mind that some of these sites have the no-follow attribute which makes them far less effective for SEO purposes.

I mainly use digg, second would probably be reddit. I think they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. I bet these sites will repace many news outlets for a the prime source of cutting edge news information.

I’ve seen stumbleupon produce short burst of heavy traffic to my own site. Other than that I haven’t gotten much out of the others.
I personally blame myself for creating less than awesome content. However, it seems the content I do submit to places like digg, reddit and netscape should get some attention.
I quickly lost interest in submissions to most of these social bookmarking websites. Stumbleupon has been the only one to give me any kind of traffic, but it didn’t really matter in the end, because none of those visitors converted.
