There are basically two types of search engines. The first is by robots called crawlers or spiders.

Search Engines use spiders to index websites. When you submit your website pages to a search engine by completing their required submission page, the search engine spider will index your entire site. A ‘spider’ is an automated program that is run by the search engine system. Spider visits a web site, read the content on the actual site, the site’s Meta tags and also follow the links that the site connects. The spider then returns all that information back to a central depository, where the data is indexed. It will visit each link you have on your website and index those sites as well. Some spiders will only index a certain number of pages on your site, so don’t create a site with 500 pages!

The spider will periodically return to the sites to check for any information that has changed. The frequency with which this happens is determined by the moderators of the search engine.

A spider is almost like a book where it contains the table of contents, the actual content and the links and references for all the websites it finds during its search, and it may index up to a million pages a day.

Example: Excite, Lycos, AltaVista and Google.

When you ask a search engine to locate information, it is actually searching through the index which it has created and not actually searching the Web. Different search engines produce different rankings because not every search engine uses the same algorithm to search through the indices.

One of the things that a search engine algorithm scans for is the frequency and location of keywords on a web page, but it can also detect artificial keyword stuffing or spamdexing. Then the algorithms analyze the way that pages link to other pages in the Web. By checking how pages link to each other, an engine can both determine what a page is about, if the keywords of the linked pages are similar to the keywords on the original page

Here are 3 little-used ways to profit from your blog’s content:

Web Design & Development28 Apr 2007 09:28 pm

We like to be complex in many aspects of our lives. We desire the latest electronic gadget, the most advance technology in our new car, the state-of-the-art digital camera. However, when it comes to web visitors browsing habit, nobody has time for complexity and we all want to find what we want online in the shortest possible time. What does not mean for web design companies? Why do some web design companies still propose complex web design solutions to their clients?

We live in an age where nobody’s got time. We are busy or so we like to think. So much information, so little time. So we zap through web pages expecting to find exactly what we want as quickly as possible. Why not? There are so many web pages out there. The average web surfer spends less than 10 seconds on a web site. If the web design is the least bit complicated or non intuitive, we are off to the next web site. If 10 seconds is all you have to impress your online customer, what sort of web design do you require to make an impact? The most flashy? May be not. Try simplicity and familiarity.

If you want to impress busy people who are short of patience and time, try the simplest web design you can put together. It is not surprising that Google is one of the most successful web designs in the world. How many people use the advanced search button on Google? The simplest web design solutions work. His does not mean that the back end of the web site need to be simple. You can have the most complex content management system; the most comprehensive feature set in your web design, but keeps the front end, the interface as simple and intuitive as you can.

Simple can mean different things to different web designers. Where do we start when putting together a simple and effective web design? Try Google heat map guide on where to place adsense on a web page. Granted it is disputed but it is a starting point for positioning the most relevant and poignant information on your web page. Next try a simple navigation, vertical left or horizontal top.

Many people like fancy stuff. There is nothing wrong with a bit of flash on a web design. However, avoid changing too much from the conventional paths. We all talk of change and recognise its benefits but we are animals of habit and we would rather go along the same easy path rather for hunt for new ways of getting somewhere. This principle applies in web design. Online visitors are used to navigating in a certain way. Change the path on your web design and you could make it too hard for your potential clients.

Keep it simple, keep it short and familiar. True, it does pay to design complex features into a web design. The more gadgets and flash, the more web design companies can charge for your web design. Some web design customers even want complex designs. It’s instinctive to think that the more money you spent on your web design, the more it will pay back. This is not always the case. Sometimes the simplest features, the more basic web design yields the most benefit.

Cartoons can be used as a tool to give you free advertising for your website or products you sell online. It’s called viral marketing and it works.

How often have you received a funny joke or cartoon in your email from a friend? And when you do, how often do you forward that same email on to friends of your own? If each of those friends sends it on to their friends, and their friends do the same with their friends, you can see how a funny cartoon can wind up being viewed by thousands of people.

Using this fact, you can do some free advertising for your website or for products you sell online. Just add a small line of copy at the bottom of the cartoon email, one with a link to your website or product. You don’t want to make it too hard-sell, just a brief note to entice some interest. Your note will then get forwarded along with the cartoon and you could reach potentially thousands of prospects.

It’s important to keep in mind, though, that cartoons are copyrighted. You can’t use them without permission, or you could subject yourself to serious legal problems. A good way around this problem is to simply contact the cartoonist for the cartoon you want to use. Ask him if you can put a link to his cartoon page in your email. In most cases they will be happy to do so. It’s free advertising for him. I do this with the cartoons on my website because I find it increases my own website traffic. Although I don’t charge a fee for this, some cartoonists might. It’s up to you to decide whether their fee is reasonable for what you expect to accomplish.

Your advertising message at the bottom of these emails can simply be a link to your webpage. If you have advertising on your website or you are selling products through affiliate links, this extra traffic can bring you some additional income. Some affiliate programs will also give you links you can use in your emails, and you could add one of those links to the bottom of the email containing the cartoon link.

In most cases you will not actually attach the cartoon to your email. If you do, spam filters will often block it. People are reluctant to open an email with an attachment because of the fear of contracting computer viruses. A far better solution is to send the email with a link to the webpage where the cartoon appears. In most cases you’ll be required by the cartoonist to do this anyway. That’s the only way he can benefit from your efforts.

How well this works depends on the cartoons you select. You want to select cartoons which are very funny, and which touch home with how people are feeling. These are the types of cartoons which will get forwarded.

Try this technique of advertising. It is free and it works.

As podcasting continues to grow, the competition for subscribers/listeners will become increasingly intense. Charging listeners for your podcast will not be the true way to podcasting profits. Those who have it in mind to turn podcasting from a hobby into a career must make every effort to stand out clearly above the crowd. The most successful podcasters will be those who set the benchmarks for professionalism, quality, and credibility.

The ability for a podcast to reach thousands, or tens of thousands, of listeners once, twice, or more per week, translates into big advertising dollars. It is those podcasters, who succeed in attracting those listeners, who will be the first to reap the profits from podcasting. The challenge from that point is keeping those listeners and turning them into long-term subscribers.

One common mistake, in thought, that people tend to gravitate to is that charging for a podcast will lead to profits. In fact, it is just the opposite that will eventually lead to the most successful podcasts. Keeping your podcast free will draw you more listeners, and by drawing more listeners you will attract more sponsors. Sponsorship will be essential to podcasters seeking to make large profits from their podcasting shows.

Not only is the podcast an advertising medium for sponsors, but the podcast can be an easy way to redirect listeners back to their website. Utilizing the popularity of a podcast to send traffic back to it’s website, will bring in additional revenues through product sales, affiliate sales, or PPC (Pay-per-Click) advertising, such as Google AdSense. A well put together and attractive website, along with a moderate flow of traffic, will bring in a healthy flow of additional revenues.

Podcasters who reach the finish line first will earn a majority of the rewards. Profitable podcasting will not be about reaching the entire globe, but it will be about reaching a sizeable portion of your niche audience. Niche audiences are more valuable than a general audience, and are a virtual gold mine to advertisers. The niche audience means that there will not be just a handful of winners in the race for profitable podcasting, but there may very well be hundreds of financially successful podcasters.

E-Commerce23 Apr 2007 06:50 pm

Electronic commerce refers to a wide range of online business activities for produced products and services. It also means to any form of business transaction in which the parties interact electronically rather than by physical exchanges. E-commerce is generally associated with buying and selling over the Internet, or conducting any form of transaction involving the transfer of ownership or rights to use goods or services through a computer-mediated network. Although is it a popular, this definition is not comprehensive enough to capture recent developments in this new and revolutionary business phenomenon. More popular and complete definition is: E-commerce is the use of electronic communications and digital information processing technology in business transactions to create, transform, and redefine relationships for value creation between or among organizations, and between organizations and individuals.

International Data Corp estimates the value of it by 2000 at US$350.38 billion. This is projected to reach to as high as US$3.14 trillion by 2004. IDC also predicts an increase for the Asian’s percentage share in worldwide e-commerce revenue from 5% in 2000 to 10% in 2004. While some people use e-commerce and e-business interchangeably, they have distinct concepts about that. Information and communications technology is used in e-commerce in inter-business or inter-organizational transactions and in business-to-consumer transactions.

On the other hand, in e-business, ICT is used to enhance one’s business. It includes any types of process that a business organization conducts over a computer-mediated network. A more popular definition of e-business is: The transformation of an organization’s processes to deliver additional customer value through the application of technologies, philosophies and computing paradigm of the new economy. There are three primary processes are enhanced in e-business.

1. Production processes: It is a process which include procurement, ordering and replenishment of stocks; processing of payments; electronic links with suppliers; and production control processes, among others.

2. Customer-focused processes: this process includes promotional and marketing efforts, selling over the Internet, processing of customers’ purchase orders and payments, and customer support, among others. And

3. Internal management processes: this is a process in which include employee services, training, internal information-sharing, video-conferencing, and recruiting. Electronic applications increase information flow between production and sales forces to improve sales force productivity. Workgroup communications and electronic publishing as internal business information are likewise made more efficient.

Audio Streaming20 Apr 2007 02:56 pm

by Sean Mize

Audio streaming has become one of the popular fads online –and I wonder how long it will remain that way. There are so many things online that have come and gone – it is almost laughable to think about it.

People used to think that banner ads were the way to go – people used to think that a sale page converted better with a banner heading – now they are not so sure.

People used to think that a graphic with the picture of your ebook was the way to go – and now, that may not be the case.

So what about audio streaming? Will it stand the test of time?

Honestly, I think not. You see, I have a basic theory about the online world – there are only two things that really matter online – and that is traffic and conversion.

Does audio streaming add to traffic or conversions?

What if the net effect is zero? What if there is a big jump at first, and then consumers end up choosing the simpler sites instead? And I think that is a very real possibility.

So if audio streaming is for real, how do you make money with it?

Remember, there are two things that impact money and making money online – traffic and conversions.

So does audio streaming add to traffic? Does audio streaming add to conversions?

Ask yourself that about your own web business and your own unique audio streaming before you begin to add audio streaming to your web site.

RSS18 Apr 2007 05:04 pm

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and while as a concept it has been around for several years it is only recently that its use has caught on with fervor and brought it immense popularity. Today there are several websites of all sizes that are using RSS technology to their advantage and so can you.

Users typically have to subscribe to RSS. The content is provided through what are known as “feeds” and the users need software known as feed readers or news aggregators in order to read the feeds. Whenever website content is updated the aggregator fetches the content summary and informs the user of it. The user can then go and read the full update. This is the advantage of RSS technology in that the provided does not have to push anything on the user. The user is simple informed of the update and left with a choice to actually read the full update or not.

Some websites offer Atom links instead of RSS. Though there are some basic differences between the two there are no major advantages or disadvantages that makes one the better of the two. Websites with feeds will have a small logo saying RSS or Atom and you simply need to click on them to subscribe.

An RSS feed in itself is nothing impressive and when you start providing them you too will have to create it. The technology is not new but it is the use that is impressive and powerful. You can easily inform all your subscribers of updates to your website easily through RSS feeds.

Product Creation17 Apr 2007 12:32 pm

by Jessica Mele

Creating your own digital product can be one of the greatest ways to start a business online. If you create the product yourself, you won’t have to spend any money in order to have something to sell. Another great benefit of creating your own product is that all of the profit is yours. You own it, so you don’t have to worry about only getting a portion of the products, which is what would happen if you sold someone else’s products. There are a few different types of digital products you can create, and each can be done to create many different products.

You can create an e-book. Many people have an interest in learning something, and if you find the right topic, you can create an e-book on it. Many people like purchasing e-books since it is easy to search through them and find what you are looking for. This is great for a how-to or to help someone solve a problem they are having.

You can create an audio file. Many people don’t want to take the time to read an e-book, and would prefer an audio file that they can listen to while they are on the go. This can also be great because you can just record a conversation you have with someone, and if it has enough information on it, you can sell it. If you don’t think you know anything of value, you can interview someone over the phone, and that can be your product.

You can create video files. Many people learn by watching, so sometimes a video file can be very helpful. You can record how to do something showing people step by step how something is done. This is great, since someone can watch parts over and over again until they understand how to do it themselves.

Once you come up with a topic that you have a lot of knowledge on, or know someone who has a lot of knowledge on, you can decide which type of digital product would work best for you. Just as a note, many people perceive audio and video files as higher end product than an e-book, and are usually willing to pay more for them. Once you create the product, which with an audio or video file could take just a little while, you can start selling your product online, and earning a profit off of it. You might even want to start an affiliate program and offer a small percentage of the profits to others in order to help them promote your product.

A really great thing about a digital product is that you create it once, and can keep selling it over and over again. If you set it up so that once payment has been made, the product is automatically sent to the customer, you won’t even have to worry about it anymore. You will be able to earn profits while you sleep, and while you are on vacation. This is another great reason that it can be great to create your own digital product.

Scams16 Apr 2007 11:48 am

by Ben Ehinger

Are you sick of getting duped out of your hard earned $100 and $50 bills? I know I am. It gets old handing over hard earned cash for the most poorly written products on the planet. You would think that these product owners could produce a better product considering they write such great sales copy.

So how can you avoid getting scammed by these savvy rip off artists? There are three major ways to avoid the scams. 1) Realize that sometimes it is not the program it is you. 2) Stop buying everything you see and changing products constantly. 3) Read reviews and do some research.

First, you need to realize one thing, you have to put in the work. There is no way you will make a dime without putting any work in, unless you can pay someone else to do it and if you are reading this you probably can’t. Be willing to give your product at least a month before dumping it and put in whatever amount of work per day or week that you can afford, just keep it consistent.

Second, you have to stop buying everything under the sun. You need to stick to 2-4 programs and get a handle on them before adding more. It is ok to work with multiple programs, but stick with them. The best rule of thumb is to plan on at least a half hour a day, 5 days a week, per program. So if you have 2 hours a day your max is 4 programs.

Last, before you purchase or join a new program read some reviews and do some research. Discussion boards, forums, and groups will give you some good information on what is worth your money and what is bogus. I used to purchase anything that sounded good and now 3 years later and about $4,000 later I have finally got smart and decided to read some reviews before I bought anything. Listen to this advice it will save you a ton of cash.

So now you know that you have to be willing to put in some work, stop buying everything that sounds good, and you read some reviews and do some research you will be able to find good products and programs to use. So get out there do the work and start changing your financial future.

Still here huh? Well, I will give you a little more and I won’t even charge you. Here is a great FREE review called the Get Rich Quick Scams Revealed and Reviewed. Go here:

Who Loves Money?

Podcasting15 Apr 2007 07:49 pm

by Richard Reichmann

What is podcasting?

Although we’ll get into the technical terms later, podcasting is an audio file that you can listen to on your computer or on a portable device. Note that it does not have to be an iPod, but can be almost any kind of portable audio device, also referred to as an MP3 player. An MP3 .player, though, is also a misnomer because these devices will often play more than just MP3 files

How can I understand podcasting?

If you were to ask someone on the street what podcasting is, most of them will not have any idea what you are talking about. They will ask if you said “broadcasting.” You might explain to them that it is a special audio file that you can listen to on your MP3 player. But even then you would not be doing it justice. Here are some other ways of understanding what podcasting is.

That is one way to think of podcasting: the information that you are interested in delivered to you, without the stuff you don’t want. Some people have called podcasting TiVo radio.

Another way to think of podcasting is like a radio program that is only about your specific interests and when you click the link or synchronize your MP3 player with your computer, it gets downloaded to you automatically.

And a third way to think of podcasting is a targeted audio program for businesses to add value to their customers and prospects, and for organizations to pass information on to their users.

However you think of podcasting, other people will still give you a funny look because it is still in its infancy. In fact, the term “podcasting” was only coined in 2004! It won’t be long, though, and everyone will be talking about it.

How does it work?

Essentially, podcasting allows you to select the things you’d like to listen to, subscribe to them, have them downloaded to your computer or portable audio device, and listen to them when you want to. Once you’ve subscribed, they will update automatically for you, like a magazine you don’t think about until the subscription arrives in your mailbox every month.

What is the advantage of a podcast over other types of broadcasting? Podcasts assimilate radio, portable CD players, and satellite radio, into one convenient format, and allow new uses not previously available. So what is it that you can listen to? What kinds of podcasting are available? The answer to those questions is this: everything you can possibly imagine! You will be amazed at the volume and variety of podcasts out there and the possibilities that exist.

Just as the Internet has allowed pretty much anybody to create visual files of information and entertainment, called web pages, podcasting has allowed virtually anybody to create audio files of information and entertainment. While the technical details are not important here, all someone needs in order to become a podcaster is a computer and an Internet hook-up. You don’t even need a microphone to create your first podcast. (You may want to get one later, but you don’t need one now). In fact, if you have a telephone and can browse the Internet, you will be able to listen to podcasts and even create your own.

Who can podcast? Anyone can podcast! We’ll go into much greater detail later about who might want to podcast, but generally speaking, there are several reasons why everyone would want to podcast:

• Organizations like churches and nonprofits will podcast to keep people up to date with what’s going on, providing news, seminars and speeches, meeting transcriptions, etc.

• Businesses will podcast to maintain their name in the marketplace, offer information on products or strategies, and position themselves as the expert in their industry.

• Individuals will podcast if they have something to say to the world. Opinions, rants, and artistic offerings are all fair game in podcasting.

Podcasting formats are as varied as the types of podcasts available. Some podcasts are like monologues where one person simply shares their ideas into a microphone for the listener to hear. Other podcasts are a dialogged between two or more people and may or may not follow format. Some podcasts are unscripted while others seem to be very scripted. Podcasting contain music, interviews, and while audio podcasts are quite popular now, audio/video podcasts are slowly gaining popularity as well.
