Domain Names31 Jan 2007 06:51 pm

Domain names would be one of the first things you should do when you have an internet marketing business. A domain name is like a brand name, address or an identity to your website. It has to be unique, concise and memorable.

Good domain name is preferably memorable. One that is memorable would be those that you can remember even if you saw it once, many years ago. It is also understood that if your domain name is memorable, it would be more likely that users would type in the correct URL in their browser.

It also has to be unique, because, you would not want your users to confuse your domain name with that of another, especially if it were your competitors. So, be clear about how it would look and sound like. One point to note is that, there are many other domain names that end with the extensions, such as .net, .biz, .tk and so on, but the .com domain name is one that is prevalent in the internet. If, for any reason, that your domain name is one that ends with other extensions like .biz, make sure that you make it memorable by capitalizing the extension. For example, if you have an address like www.domainnames.net would want to make it more obvious by displaying your address as www.domainnames.NET. This way, users would be more likely to remember that it ended with .net instead of .com. Being memorable helps to bring more visitors.

When your business is progressing more aggressively, you may want to consider buying a domain name that is wrong as well. For example, your URL could be www.domainnames.com, however, some users may remember it as www.domainname.com, without the‘s’ at the end. You can then direct the users who typed the wrong URL to your website.

Your domain name should reflect what type of website that you have. No point having a website about cars but your domain name says something like www.goodseats.com. The further away a domain name is from whom you are or what you do, the more likely it is you won’t have great success in marketing.

You can register for a domain name at www.GoDaddy.com. They have a good range of domain name extensions and you can use their smart search if you have difficulties in deciding what domain name is the most unique, concise and memorable.

E-Commerce29 Jan 2007 04:46 pm

That’s what we’re interested in, correct? Making money online, and making money online is accomplished through E-commerce. That is, having a website with a product to sell, and with any luck, selling that product via the World Wide Web. E-commerce isn’t as simple as having a product that you think will sell, slapping a website up, and selling it.

I used to think this is how it worked. I thought if you had a professional looking website, with products I thought would sell, I would receive orders. Then I realized that nothing could be further from the truth. Why I would have thought that the internet was any different from any other business, I’m not sure, but that’s obviously what I thought. It may have something to do with all of the crap floating around about people becoming “overnight successes” on the internet. It seems like everywhere a person turns, there’s another story in the media about someone making it big on the internet. In any case I fell into the trap of expecting the impossible. Namely, expecting to have a successful website without much effort.

Then after about six months of spinning my wheels, expecting the impossible, I realized a lot more effort was going to have to be put forth. I realized E-commerce was a process. I had to convince people to buy my products, just as is done in any other business. It wasn’t enough just to have a page with a product on it, you have to convince the public that they need it.

While learning to make money online, I also realized that many of the people that you talk to, want to make money off of you, and don’t truly have the best interests of your website in mind. For example, for months and months our webmaster was pushing a certain product on us to create newsletters. It seemed like a great product, but we had no one to send a newsletter to. Did he have any suggestions for getting subscribers? No, he just wanted us to buy the product. He wanted us to buy the product, because he got a piece of the action. He didn’t care whether or not we actually needed it. This kind of thing seems to happen a lot on the internet. I suppose to be truthful, it happens everywhere, not just the internet.

The biggest thing to remember is that making money online is a process and doesn’t happen overnight. If you want to make money online, the best thing you can do is start educating yourself. The more educated you can become about the process, the better. You didn’t learn how to do long division all at once, right. You learned through a process and making money online is no different.

I have been asked many times if adding RSS feed content to your web site helps improve page rank and web site placement in the free search listings. First we have to look at RSS and if it’s right for your web site.

RSS is basically Really Simple Syndication written in XML code. It allows a script to run in a RSS Reader or on your website that allows updated content that you subscribe to automatically become up to date as soon as it is published.

The great thing about this is that you can always have fresh content on your site without having to do any updating or babysitting.

Search engines have been known to eat up RSS feed content on web sites. They love to deliver new information to visitors. One thing to remember is that the feed must be displayed in HTML format. Search engine spiders do not read java script as plain text, so it is essential to better placement that HTML code be placed in your site instead.

There are several programs that do all the hard work for you. RSS Equalizer is easy to install and lets you customize your feeds to fit your particular subject content you need. It all works on your web server backend. You log in, set up the categories of feed you want, test them, and place them on your site. No need to update, it’s all automatic.

Next, does your site have an area that you can ad RSS feed content to? You can ad some to the home page. In the setup, you can set how many topics you want listed on a page.

It is only relevant to the engines if the keywords you are trying to place with also reflect in the RSS content. So the keywords must be in the title tag, keyword tag, description tag, page content, and RSS feed content for best results.

Try testing a secondary page that is not your home page. Optimize your web site for best placement, and then add the RSS content. MSN will pick it up very quickly, Yahoo, and Google will be soon to follow. If certain content doesn’t work, go back to the sites where you pulled the RSS feeds from and see if there is more keyword relevant content.

For example you can pull an SEO related feed that will have SEO in every topic. Ten topics to the feed, that’s 10 keywords added to your page content.

Keep an eye on it for the first few weeks. If it is getting you into the listings, you are doing great. You have a robotic editor keeping your site in great position.

Good luck and have fun not matter what you do.

Every webmaster dreams of getting so much traffic from the search engines that it overloads the circuits of their web hosting provider’s network. Getting your site listed on page one for several relevant keyword phrases on the major search engines is the key to approaching this level of traffic. Getting there requires creative writing skills, diligent effort and a little knowledge about search engine optimization. Read on for some search optimization instructions including five indispensable elements to help your search engine rankings and resulting traffic.

Content is King - If you have done any research on search engine optimization, you are aware of the need to optimize the content of your web pages. Your content must be optimized for the search engines and have optimal usage of your most important relevant keywords and keyword phrases. As you write user friendly content keep in mind you should be optimizing your pages with phrases that best match your overall theme. This is preferred by the search engine algorithms. You can then focus on link popularity and link quality to help drive traffic. More on those two strategies in a moment.

Keyword Optimization - By optimizing your pages with the phrases that best match the overall theme of your site, it will improve the likelihood that users will find your site when searching for content like yours. You should seek out short multi-word phrases unless your keywords are unique. First, find your optimum keywords and determine their popularity. Also, use your top keyword phrases within your meta tags including your title, description, keyword and h1 through h6 meta tags.

Link Popularity - To increase your traffic, you must increase your link popularity. Link popularity is the number of links on the internet that reference to your website. If you are on a budget, link popularity can generally be increased primarily in two ways. The first method is by exchanging links with other web sites with similar content. The second method is publishing articles online that relate to your site, including a link to your site in the article and then publishing the article on as many article directory sites as possible. Employing both methods is the most effective; however, the latter is extremely effective because it creates multiple one-way links back to your site.

Article Publishing - Most webmasters frequently seek out good site content - remember content is king. They either lack the writing skills or lack the innovation or initiative to develop the content themselves. Webmasters with a budget often hire ghost writers. Those without money look to article directories to obtain some of their content. This demand for content by other webmasters creates an opportunity for you to socialize your site. Writing articles that relate to your content and publishing those articles within article directories ultimately disseminates your link onto other webmaster’s sites. Think of the potential here. You are getting a one-way link from every site that posts your article. Top search engine optimization gurus exploit this little known strategy to drive their client web sites to top rankings

Link Quality - Remember, link popularity is important, but link quality may be even more crucial. There are two facets to link quality. First, sites that are pointing to your website ideally must have related content. Search engines will give links from sites with related content more credibility. The second component to link quality is the actual words the other webmaster uses in your link. The goal is to ensure the links pointing back to your website include your most relevant keywords in the link title.

Search engine optimization requires a combination of these five elements. Highly optimizing your website content and obtaining high link popularity from quality links will absolutely strengthen your search engine rankings over time. Of course, as with many things, your level of effort at implementing these elements is directly proportional with the results you can expect to get out.
